One of the most debated and discussed topics in the world of cannabis is weed strains. There are so many, so knowing which ones to pick is no easy task. The good news is I have personally tried dozens, if not hundreds, of different strains. I also worked as a budtender for years and will be sharing some great strains with you below.
Keep in mind that this topic is highly subjective, and there really is no one best weed strain. That said, I’ll be showing you a wide range of strains and many of the most popular weed strains of all time.
Table of Contents
1. OG Kush
THC | 18% to 26% |
Aroma | Earthy, Pine, Citrus |
Flavor | Pine, Woody, Earthy |
Strain type | Hybrid |
OG Kush is the world’s most popular weed strain, and millions of stoners swear by it. It offers a combination of potent effects, distinct aroma, and mysterious origins. Its lineage is thought to be traced back to Chemdawg and Hindu Kush, leading to its name, “Ocean Grown Kush.”
This was the first strain I ever smoked and it made me fall in love with marijuana. I heard Snoop mentioning it in one of his songs, and I went to the dispensary asking for OG Kush. Fortunately, you can find this in thousands of dispensaries throughout America.
It only took two hits to make me so high that I had to stretch in my chair. I felt my energy going up, and overall, I really enjoyed the high. You feel a buzz in your head, and this is coupled with a relaxing body sensation, so it gives you a full-on stoner experience.
I’m not a big fan of the aroma profile that smells very earthy, but it’s accompanied by undernotes of citrus that give it a slightly fruity smell. Expect a mix of earthy and fruity aromas when you smoke OG Kush.
I’d recommend taking this if you’re chilling with friends at a house party and you all want to get high. It’s a great strain that’ll make you laugh and have a good time with your friends. It won’t get you high to a point where you can’t handle it, and it won’t make you ultra-sedated.
Don’t expect to get work done while smoking OG Kush unless you’re Snoop Dogg at the studio and your tolerance levels are through the roof.
There’s a reason why this is the world’s most popular strain. It gives you this balanced high, makes you feel relaxed, and makes you feel good. It also has therapeutic benefits and many people take it to relieve mental stress and anxiety.
This strain’s far-reaching influence has led to the creation of numerous hybrid offspring, cementing its place in the foundation of modern cannabis culture. No one really knows where it came from, and it’s all speculation. The exact origins of OG Kush remain a subject of debate, adding to its mystique.
2. Sour Diesel
THC | 17% to 26% |
Aroma | Pungent, Diesel |
Flavor | Diesel, Pungent, Skunk |
Strain type | Sativa |
Sour Diesel is one of the GOAT strains that even non-smokers have heard of. This is a must-try for everyone, and you should blaze it at least once in your lifetime to experience real weed.
If I had to smoke one weed strain for the rest of my life, it’d probably be Sour Diesel. It’s one of the most popular weed strains globally, right up there with OG Kush. It’s sativa dominant, so expect a strong cerebral high.
There are three reasons this strain is popular. It’s energizing, potent, and has a pungent aroma. Sour Diesel is actually a hybrid between Northern Lights, Chemdawg, and Skunk #1. The name is derived from the potent Diesel smell that has a citrusy undertone and makes it pleasant to smoke.
I always feel euphoric and happy when I smoke Sour Diesel. I’ve never had a bad high on this strain, and I made some of the greatest memories with my friends smoking it. It’s a perfect social strain when you’re hanging out with your buddies.
When you smoke it with your friends, everyone will be laughing and having a good time. You’ll share stories and ask deep questions about the universe. It sparks creativity, so it’s ideal for a brainstorming session.
The THC level is medium and ranges between 17-26% depending on how it was grown. No matter where I smoked this strain, I felt a similar boost of energy that was coupled with euphoria.
This euphoria gives me an elevated mood and boosts my focus. I love to wake and bake on it because I can start my day feeling positive. I then use the surge of energy to start my work day and socialize with my coworkers.
Smoke Sour Diesel during the day to feel all the effects. If you’re smoking at night, you better be at a house party with friends to get the best experience. You’ll get a lot of energy, so it’ll be difficult to sleep after you consume it at night.
When I first touched the bud, I noticed these distinct green hues that had beautiful orange hairs and resin. I didn’t like the aroma at first because it was one of the strongest I ever felt. I got used to it and now associate it with happiness.
You’ll find Sour Diesel in pretty much every dispensary in America because it’s so popular. There are countless songs and references in popular culture because it’s that good. This strain will always have a place among the greatest strains to be made.
Sour Diesel’s enduring popularity, distinctive scent, and stimulating effects have left an indelible mark on cannabis culture. As the cannabis world changes and welcomes new plants, this strain stays solid.
3. Girl Scout Cookies
THC | 17% to 28% |
Aroma | Sugary Baked Goods, Herbal, Spicy, Minty |
Flavor | Minty |
Strain type | Hybrid |
I was recommended Girl Scout Cookies (GSC) by a friend who was convinced it’s the greatest strain to ever exist. The name sounded ridiculous to me, but I gave it a try. If you’re new to cannabis, you’ll learn this is one of the world’s most famous strains, and many hybrids are derived from it.
If you love the potent effects of OG Kush and Durban Poison, you’re in luck because this is a hybrid between them. During the last ten years, it shot up in popularity and became one of the most desirable strains.
I felt ultra creative when I smoked GSC and came up with some brilliant ideas that I’d have never thought of sober. It felt like I had an elevated state of mind, and I had all these ideas coming to me while brainstorming with a friend.
I’d describe being on GSC as a very balanced high. It was probably the most balanced high I ever felt in my life. The first time I smoked it, I felt a tender high that made me happy and euphoric without any side effects. Plus, it activated parts of my brain that helped me loosen up and brainstorm.
I really love to smoke this when I’m doing creative things like writing, drawing, or any activity that requires creative thinking. I can see why artists love this strain a lot. The only side-effect I felt was that it always gave me the munchies, and I was running to the fridge constantly.
If you struggle with appetite, GSC will almost always give you the munchies. The strain is becoming iconic in the industry and this has led to many spin-off strains. This is also a strain I like to make moonrocks with.
GSC offers a combination of enticing flavors, diverse effects, and therapeutic potential that has solidified its place as a cornerstone strain within the cannabis community. In my opinion, there are only a few plants that will match the perfectly balanced high from this hybrid. Just think, you can enjoy GSC without having to meet the troops. If you’re looking for a cannabis strain that will make you feel creative and give you a balanced high, definitely try GSC.
4. Purple Haze
THC | 14% to 25% |
Aroma | Earthy, Sweet, Berry |
Flavor | Lavender, Grape, Berry |
Strain type | Sativa |
I knew I heard the name “Purple Haze” somewhere until I popped it on YouTube and realized Jimi Hendrix made a song about it that I used to listen to as a kid. It brought back memories.
This strain is derived from the original Haze, which itself has mysterious origins. Haze was ultra-popular in the 60s during the hippie era, and it was the most smoked strain back then.
Purple Haze didn’t exist when Jimi Hendrix wrote that song, but they made it in his honor. I noticed it was not really purple when I first saw it at a dispensary, but it did have purple hues and vivid greens. This is a sativa strain with a strong head high and a berry-like aroma profile.
I rolled Purple Haze in a joint and started playing the song before I lit it on fire. It made me feel introspective and creative, kind of like I was in the studio with Jimmy, and I was kicking back and enjoying the vibes. This is one of my favorite strains when I’m hanging out with friends.
I became more talkative and started having deep conversations. The high felt like it was solely focused on my head with almost zero body effects. That’s the nature of a true sativa.
It didn’t feel like the ultimate high, and it mostly tests between 14-25%, so even a beginner could handle this strain. I felt an instant energetic rush that kind of leveled off after a while, and then I entered this dreamy, blissful state that made me feel calm.
If you love sativa strains that give you a head high, this is one of the world’s greatest strains. However, I’ve had a friend tripping out badly while using it because he was prone to anxiety and fear, and he smoked it alone. Maybe avoid smoking this alone and get some friends around when you do it.
Purple Haze’s cultural significance, vibrant appearance, and distinctive effects have contributed to its lasting popularity in the cannabis community. Keep in mind that this strain can bring your desire to munch to whole new levels. Don’t worry, though; we have a full guide on how to avoid the munchies.
5. Jack Herer
THC | 15% to 24% |
Aroma | Spicy, Pine, Sweet, Citrusy |
Flavor | Pine, Spicy, Herbal, Woody |
Strain type | Sativa |
Jack Herer is one of the world’s most famous strains. I first noticed how green the bud is and it stood out a lot at the dispensary. It’s a hybrid made from Haze, Northern Lights, and Shiva Skunk.
My friend told me that it reminded me of Haze, which I love for productivity, so I gave it a try. I felt a sudden rush of energy that made me get up off the couch and start walking around my apartment. It hit my head hard and made me feel focused.
I’ve used it as a productivity strain since. Whenever I need to get a job done or do something challenging, I love to smoke Jack Herer. Haze, its parent strain, is also known for its productivity effects, so you’ll notice that when you smoke it.
The THC content is mild and ranges from 15% to 24%, so you won’t get mind-numbingly high on Jack Herer. Expect to feel an uplifting high in the head due to the sativa content. The uplifting energy will turn to slight euphoria and then become a focused high.
I can actually get work done on Jack Herer. It makes me zone in on the task at hand, and I don’t feel like resting on my couch and eating cookies. I do feel relaxed, but it’s not like an indica kind of relaxation that makes you laid back.
The aroma profile feels a bit “herbal,” sort of like the smell of tea. You’ll get a mix of piney or woody flavors that make for a decent smoking experience. It’s not skunky, but it’s not fruity, either. It has its own distinct herbal flavor profile.
I’ll always associate Jack Herer with a head high and productivity. Stoners struggling with focus who love to wake and bake should give it a try. It won’t overwhelm you, even if you’re new to cannabis.
Due to its historical significance, robust effects, and versatile benefits, Jack Herer has become a staple in the 420 community and among the most popular strains.
6. Northern Lights
THC | 16% to 33% |
Aroma | Earthy, Pine, Sweet |
Flavor | Pine, Spicy, Herbal, Earthy |
Strain type | Indica |
When I first started smoking, I asked the salespeople at the dispensary about the greatest indica strains, and one of them told me about Northern Lights. I’ve seen the real Northern Lights in Finland, and the name sounded cool, so I gave it a try. This is actually one of the most legendary indica strains that are known for its relaxing effects and resinous buds.
Northern Lights originated from Afghani and Thai landrace strains, resulting in a potent and enduring classic. It’s been around for a while, and you’ll likely try it out at some point.
This was one of the most potent strains I ever tried in my life. I saw that its highest test was 33%, which is pretty much the peak THC level for any strain, so skip this if you’re new to cannabis and don’t have the tolerance level.
I was couch-locked so hard that I wanted to nap for the duration of the day, but I felt happy all the way. It started creeping in slowly in my head, and then it enveloped my body in this cozy sensation. It’s like wrapping yourself in a blanket on the couch during wintertime.
I’d recommend taking this at night before going to bed because it’s an indica that won’t give you energy. You want to use this to relax and when you’re struggling with sleep. It’ll put you to sleep.
It actually smelled similar to White Widow, with an aroma that reminded me of the forest. When I lit it up, it felt earthy with piney undertones and a subtle sweetness.
You can recognize it by the frosty trichomes, exhibiting vibrant green hues and fiery orange hairs. This strain is always among the most popular at the dispensary, and medicinal users love it for its potential to manage insomnia, pain, anxiety, and stress. It personally put me to sleep, so I can see why people struggling with sleep would use it.
Don’t take this if you’re new to cannabis. Take a few months to build up your tolerance levels with less-potent strains that won’t knock you out, and then give it a try.
Northern Lights enduring popularity is a testament to its consistent effects and therapeutic benefits. Its tranquil nature and soothing effects continue to make it a cherished choice among both recreational and medicinal users. The last benefit, but certainly not least, is the ability of this strain to arouse your partner. We’ve noted that in other posts but feel it’s necessary to repeat it. This is a great strain for arousal and also a great strain for sex.
7. Strawberry Cough
THC | 15% to 26% |
Aroma | Strawberry, Earthy |
Flavor | Strawberry, Spicy |
Strain type | Sativa Dominant Hybrid |
A friend pulled me to the side one day and showed me this strain that had a reputation for making everyone cough. He said, “You think you can handle this”? And I replied – yes. I wasn’t so confident after smoking it.
I immediately coughed on my first puff, and I learned that it’s because it has this fruity strawberry aroma with microbes that stick to your throat and make you cough. It’s why it’s named Strawberry Cough. You can stop coughing when you smoke more, and your throat gets used to it, but even a veteran smoker like me will cough.
Here’s what you should know: It’s a sativa-dominant hybrid, so all the effects will be around the head. Don’t expect much of a body high or to feel “chill” while you’re smoking this. Strawberry Cough is another Haze hybrid cross that includes genetics from Strawberry Fields.
The Strawberry part of the name also makes sense, considering it smelled like freshly picked strawberries when I first blazed it. It reminded me of my grandma’s strawberry field in the summer when I was picking the fruit as a kid. I really love fruity scents like that. You’ll also feel some earthly undertones like with other hybrids.
The high was very mellow, and it didn’t hit me hard. I felt a minor buzz, and then my mental clarity heightened. There was a pinch of euphoria, but it didn’t make me jump up in happiness. This felt like one of the most mellow strains I’ve ever smoked.
I’ll smoke Strawberry Cough again if I ever want a mellow high that won’t mess with my mood. The THC levels test between 15-20%, so this is on the lower end, and it won’t make you feel too high.
It’s a sativa, so expect to gain a bit of energy and make sure you smoke it during the day. If you smoke it at night, you could struggle going to bed later.
The combination of its unique aroma, gentle smoke, and uplifting effects has contributed to Strawberry Cough’s popularity in the cannabis community. Just a note, as stated above, to remind you that though it has “cough” in the name, this strain is a gentle inhale and shouldn’t cause coughing or tightness to the chest, even if you take the green hit. Overall, Strawberry Cough is easily one of the best weed strains of all time.
8. Granddaddy Purple
THC | 15% to 23% |
Aroma | Fruity, Grape |
Flavor | Grape |
Strain type | Indica Dominant Hybrid |
There’s a chance you’ve heard of Grandaddy Purple if you’ve been around stoners for more than a week because this is one of the all-time greats. It has a modest 15-23% THC content so this is something you can smoke on the daily without overwhelming you.
If you’re not a fan of indicas, you’re not going to like it because it’s mostly indica-dominant. I loved the appearance of Grandaddy Purple, and it had these striking purplish hues and dense resin-rich buds. It felt like holding a masterpiece in hand.
The strain is a hybrid cross between Purple Urkle and Big Bud, so the buds are pretty large and beautiful. I smelled the bud and noticed it had a grape-like aroma that reminded me of my childhood in the countryside. This is one of the best-smelling strains if you like fruity aromas.
I felt a cerebral uplift a couple of minutes after smoking, and I knew the high was setting in. Every time I smoke Grandaddy Purple, I feel my sensory perception increasing. It’s like you’re Spiderman, and you see and notice things that others don’t.
I also felt a dreamy state, and the high shifted down to my body. It pretty much couch-locked me until the high wore off a few hours later. This felt like one of those strains that people associate with stoners. It makes you want to chill and eat, and the fruity smell makes you want to smoke more, so you end up overdoing it.
The strain’s terpene profile contributes to its distinct grape and berry aroma and is accompanied by earthy undertones. The combination of terpenes and cannabinoids within GDP is thought to contribute to its potential therapeutic benefits, including sedative and analgesic effects.
Granddaddy Purple’s striking appearance, robust effects, and captivating aroma have garnered it a loyal following and accolades within the cannabis community. The popularity of this old-school go-to remains current and at the top of our list.
9. Chemdawg
THC | 15% to 20% |
Aroma | Diesel |
Flavor | Diesel, Chemical, Pungent |
Strain type | Hybrid |
Do you love the smell of potent weed? Get yourself some Chemdawg and fill the place with vapor. When I miss the smell of marijuana, I get this because it has the most potent, stereotypical weed aroma.
Chemdawg is a mild, legendary hybrid that is known for its Diesel-like aroma and for spawning some excellent strains like OG Kush. Its exact lineage remains shrouded in mystery, but it’s believed to be a cross of Nepalese and Thai landraces.
The first time I smoked Chemdawg, I couldn’t believe how strong the smell was. My whole living room started smelling, and I wasn’t able to get rid of the smell for a day. It actually made me like the strain because it’s the typical smell people associate with weed.
The high was relatively mild to me and I didn’t feel anything special. It started with a regular cerebral rush, and I felt happy. An hour into the high, I felt it moving down to my body, but I wasn’t chained to the couch.
Don’t expect to get the best high of your life on Chemdawg. You’ll only feel content and relaxed, and you won’t feel lazy unless you smoke an ungodly amount of it. It also didn’t make me hungry, so it’s not much of a munchie strain. I usually get hungry when I smell fruity strains, but not this.
The aroma profile is the strongest, so if you’re with people who are sensitive to smell, they might not like it. Get used to your room reeking of Diesel with skunky undertones. If you’re with hardcore weed enthusiasts, they’re going to love the smell.
Chemdawg is a parent strain for the world’s most popular strains. It actually played a role in breeding strains like OG Kush and Sour Diesel. Its potency makes it a preferred choice for experienced users seeking a well-rounded smoking experience.
Get Chemdawg if you like skunky strains and don’t want any fruity flavors. I recommend smoking this strain at least once in your life, and you’ll realize why some of the world’s greatest strains are derived from it.
10. Blue Dream
THC | 17% to 25% |
Aroma | Sweet, Blueberry, Earthy |
Flavor | Blueberry, Berry, Sweet |
Strain type | Hybrid |
Blue Dream is one of the greatest hybrids of all time. It’s what real weed is supposed to feel like, with well-rounded effects and a beautiful flavor. The first thing that struck me was the blue-green buds that made it stand out.
I’ve never seen blue(ish) buds like that. If you like Haze and energetic strains, you’re going to love Blue Dream. It’s a hybrid derived from Haze and Blueberry, so expect Haze-like focus and Blueberry-like aromas.
Smoking Blue Dream felt similar to Haze, except the smell was better. Within minutes of smoking, I felt the high creeping in my head and body. I then got a rush of creative energy that made me want to start brainstorming.
I remember writing down business ideas when I first smoked Blue Dream and having one of the biggest creative outbursts ever. The energy rush was intense, but then the high spread to my body, and I felt relaxed, too, after it started wearing off.
You can experience both the energetic rush of a sativa and the relaxing effects of an indica in this hybrid. The sativa feels more dominant because the head high kicks-in first, and then it settles in your body.
For a sativa strain, it has a very beautiful aroma that reminds you of Blueberries. If you’ve ever been to a Blueberry field in summer, the smell is similar. You’ll feel a very pleasant sensory experience, and you might notice hints of herbal spiciness.
The THC levels are mid, testing between 17-25%, so don’t expect to feel ultra high on it. You’ll get a head high that will give you energy, and you’ll then feel a body high that will make you feel relaxed.
The body high is not that intense, and it’s more of a gentle, relaxing feel. By comparison, I’ve smoked indicas that made me feel chained to the couch. Blue Dream is definitely not one of those strains.
I’d describe this as a “versatile” strain that makes you feel all aspects of a THC high. You get to feel the mind-enhancing properties of sativa strain and the relaxing body effects of an indica strain simultaneously.
The strain’s popularity has led to its widespread availability and numerous cannabis cup awards. Its approachable effects and enjoyable flavor have solidified its status as a classic strain that appeals to a wide range of cannabis enthusiasts. This is currently one of the most popular strains.
11. Bruce Banner
THC | 16% to 29% |
Aroma | Sweet, Strawberry, Earthy, Diesel |
Flavor | Strawberry |
Strain type | Hybrid |
I’d describe Bruce Banner as “OG Kush that smells better.” OG Kush has a decent smell, but this shares genetics with the strain and smells like strawberry, so you get a better aroma. Bruce Banner is one of the newer strains, and you’ll realize why it’s gaining popularity once you give it a try.
Bruce Banner is one of the highest THC strains I ever tried, and it tests up to 29%, so you get a really powerful head high. I felt like I was on Adderall when I first smoked it because it gave me a surge of energy and made me walk around my apartment.
It’s not a lazy man’s strain because it makes you get up off your couch and go to work. I like to smoke this before a challenging task at work to motivate myself. If I have to put in a long shift and I don’t feel like doing it, this strain really helps out.
Within 10-20 minutes of smoking it, I feel the first wave of energy hitting me. This is the strongest wave, and then I get intense energy that lasts a few hours. It feels like it prevails and doesn’t wear off for the duration of the day, although the intensity decreases.
You could use this when you’re feeling lazy and distracted to concentrate on a task. The cerebral effects are similar to OG Kush because it’s derived from it and Strawberry Diesel. OG Kush is the most famous strain because it gives you focus and Strawberry Diesel smells fruit with a strawberry-like scent.
I’m always tempted to smoke more due to the beautiful scent, but I remind myself not to do it because it’s so potent. You could green out easily on this strain if you overdo it – it’s one of the world’s most powerful.
Oh, and it’s named after Bruce Banner, also known as the Hulk. It actually makes you feel like the Hulk when you’re on it with all the extra energy you’re gaining. I’ve heard people saying they use it for relaxation, but it’s always made me hyper energetic.
Bruce Banner’s aroma is a fusion of sweet strawberries and earthy diesel, complementing its equally complex flavor profile. The taste typically offers a mix of fruity and pungent notes, so you get a memorable smoking experience.
The strain’s connection to pop culture, along with its robust effects and intriguing flavor, has solidified its place in the cannabis world. Bruce Banner definitely lives up to its name.
12. Gelato
THC | 15% to 25% |
Aroma | Sweet, Fruity, Minty, Earthy |
Flavor | Sweet, Vanilla, Mint |
Strain type | Hybrid |
Gelato (also known as “Larry Bird Kush”) is a flavorful and potent hybrid cannabis strain that really stood out to me with its delightful taste, diverse effects, and striking appearance. A cross between Sunset Sherbet and Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies, Gelato’s genetics contribute to its rich flavor and well-rounded experience.
The strain’s name derives from its dessert-like aroma and taste, but I really wanted to try it out because I’m a fan of Larry Bird (one of the greatest basketball players). I was immediately delighted by the fruity aroma with hints of mint and earthiness.
I loved holding the bud in hand and observing the colors, from deep purples to vibrant greens, and they were covered in a thick layer of resinous trichomes.
I didn’t feel ultra high on this, and it was more of a mid-level relaxing buzz. I felt the effects kicking in 10-15 minutes after smoking and it had a tender buzz.
I then started giggling and feeling euphoric. Fortunately, I was with friends, so I had someone to share the experience. This strain will make you laugh and feel euphoric, so no wonder it’s a favorite among many.
There’s this feeling of happiness and euphoria that overwhelms you when you first feel the high. I felt the intensity of the euphoria lowering after an hour, but it wasn’t like it made me feel sedated.
I have a friend who uses Gelato as a medicinal strain. It’s known for its multifaceted effects that offer physical relief, and you get the whole holistic experience with it.
Gelato’s unique blend of flavors, appealing appearance, and diverse effects have solidified its place as a favorite among cannabis enthusiasts.
13. Gorilla Glue #4
THC | 18% to 32% |
Aroma | Earthy, Pine, Sour, Citrus |
Flavor | Pungent, Pine, Earthy |
Strain type | Hybrid |
Gorilla Glue #4, often abbreviated as GG4, is a heavyweight hybrid cannabis strain renowned for its immense potency, resinous buds, and captivating effects. A genetic blend of Chem’s Sister, Sour Dubb, and Chocolate Diesel, GG4 has earned its place as a favorite in the 420 community.
The name first threw me off because it sounded funky, but I gave it a try after a cute stoner girl convinced me at the dispensary. The strain is named after its resin-rich trichomes that resemble the adhesive properties of the popular glue. I also heard it tested above 30%, so I wanted to give it a try.
I felt one of the most powerful highs of my life when I first smoked Gorilla Glue. It completely threw me off because I overdid it, thinking this would be like any other strain. I immediately fell back on my couch and entered Highland.
I felt this sudden wave of happiness as I was staring at the ceiling and I was alone. Then, I was hit by a tranquilizing sensation that put me out and relaxed me.
Smoking this felt like meditating for a couple of hours and then opening your eyes. I wouldn’t try this strain again unless I was looking to get high as a kite. If you’re not a fan of high THC strains, you should get something less powerful.
The aroma wasn’t my favorite because it smelled very earthy and piny, and I prefer fruity flavors. I felt a bit of sweetness that balanced out the smell, but there are many better-smelling strains out there. If you’re picky about aroma profiles, you won’t be impressed by this strain.
I’ve also heard of people turning to GG4 for its medicinal properties. This has a healthy amount of CBD that can alleviate symptoms of pain, stress, anxiety, and insomnia. Its high THC content and sedative effects make it valuable for both recreational and therapeutic purposes.
Gorilla Glue #4’s reputation for potency, resinous buds, and robust effects has cemented its status as a heavyweight contender in the cannabis world. The memory of this high will stick with you for quite some time.
14. Wedding Cake
THC | 18% to 27% |
Aroma | Sugary Cake Batter, Vanilla, Earthy, Tangy |
Flavor | Sweet, Vanilla |
Strain type | Hybrid |
This is my favorite sweet-tasting weed strain, and all my friends who tried it were impressed by the aroma profile. The name was probably inspired by the flavor that smells like vanilla and might remind someone of an actual wedding cake.
This strain is gaining in popularity for its delectable flavor, well-balanced effects, and striking appearance. A cross between Cherry Pie and Girl Scout Cookies (GSC), Wedding Cake’s name reflects its sweet taste and indulgent qualities.
When I first lit it up, it gave me the munchies because the aroma reminded me of a sugary vanilla cake. There was a hint of tanginess. I immediately ran to the fridge looking for candy, only to end up disappointed. Make sure you have a chocolate bar around when you smoke Wedding Cake.
I was also impressed by the beauty of the bud. The bud was dense and frosty, and it had beautiful orange pistils. You can recognize the strain by the range of green hues, making it visually appealing.
It took a while for the high to kick in, and I felt a beautiful, balanced buzz that was easy to handle. It wasn’t a super powerful high, but I felt my mind elevating and that was coupled with the feeling of gentle relaxation. It feels like being on top of a mountain and looking down at a beautiful view while being relaxed.
The THC content of Wedding Cake was tested between 18-27%, so it can range wildly based on the way it was grown. I wouldn’t recommend it for beginners because it can hit them hard.
This strain’s versatility has made it popular among recreational and medicinal users alike. The very alluring qualities, from its taste to the effects of this strain, have solidified its position as a favorite within the cannabis community. This sweet bud may not cure a sweet tooth, but it’s certainly pleasing to all the senses.
15. Super Lemon Haze
THC | 15% to 25% |
Aroma | Lemony, Zesty, Citrusy, & Sweet |
Flavor | Citrus, Lemon, Lime |
Strain type | Hybrid |
Super Lemon Haze is a celebrated and invigorating cannabis strain known for its zesty lemon aroma, uplifting effects, and impressive genetics. A hybrid of Lemon Skunk and Super Silver Haze, this strain embodies a refreshing burst of citrus and gives a euphoric high.
I was struck by the aroma profile of this strain when I first smelled it. A guy at the dispensary was showing me a jar full of Super Lemon Haze, and it was like smelling a lemon fruit with sweet undertones. This is the best-smelling strain I ever smoked.
It gave me a rush of energy within minutes of smoking it, and it felt like a powerful sativa strain. I felt an intense euphoria creeping in with the high and a sense of bliss. This made me more sociable, and I was able to relax and share these feelings with my friends.
I’d only smoke this strain during the day because the energy rush is strong, and I’d find it hard to sleep at night if I took it before bed. I use it as a wake and bake motivational strain to give me energy in the morning and preserve it throughout the day.
I also have a friend who swears by it since he used to struggle with anxiety, and it helps him improve his mood. The strain’s mood-enhancing qualities, combined with its potential pain-relieving effects, make it versatile for a range of therapeutic purposes.
Super Lemon Haze’s aromatic and stimulating qualities have contributed to its popularity among cannabis enthusiasts seeking a bright and invigorating experience. This strain is great for breaking into the cannabis world. It’s a gentle introduction to a wild ride and offers a delectable taste.
16. White Widow
THC | 14% to 25% |
Aroma | Earthy, Woody, Sweet |
Flavor | Woody, Spicy, Herbal, Earthy |
Strain type | Hybrid |
White Widow is an influential hybrid cannabis strain known for its balanced effects, resin-rich buds, and widespread popularity. A cross between Brazilian and South Indian landrace strains, White Widow has become a cornerstone in the modern cannabis culture.
This strain really stood out to me appearance-wise, and it made me curious because it was covered in these white trichomes with vivid green buds. I’d never seen bud looking as white as that.
The high felt mild, and it was one of the chilliest strains I’d ever smoked. It gave me this small cerebral euphoria, and an hour in it turned into a gentle relaxation. However, I didn’t feel lazy or couch-locked on it so I’d say it was a balanced high.
The balanced relaxed high I got from White Widow made me realize why people swear by this strain. The THC content is only between 14-25%, so it’s not going to overwhelm you, and it’s not a downer that can ruin your mood. You just feel super relaxed and happy with yourself.
It has these beautiful frosty white trichomes that make you want to light it up right away. The smell is not too strong, and it gives off earthy/woody undernotes, kind of like the smell of a forest. The aroma is decent when you smoke it.
This strain can also be used medicinally because it’s known to relieve pain. I only used it recreationally, but I can see why that’s the case because it relaxed my body. Its balanced effects make it versatile for various therapeutic needs, whether seeking mental relief or physical relaxation.
The strain’s reputation as a classic and its enduring appeal has solidified its place in the 420 community. White Widow will always be around, and if you haven’t tried it yet, I definitely recommend it.
17. Pineapple Express
THC | 17% to 25% |
Aroma | Tangerines |
Flavor | Orange, Citrus, Tropical |
Strain type | Sativa |
I watched the movie Pineapple Express and found out there’s a strain named after it. This strain is quite new and was made as a hybrid cross between Hawaiian and Trainwreck. I was never a fan of Trainwreck because it always made me feel sluggish, but I gave this a try.
The main thing I liked here was the aroma. I love tropical-smelling strains, and this was one of the best tropical aromas I ever smelled. It felt like a mixture of lemons, oranges, citrus, and other beautiful fruits. I could smell it in the bud and in the air when I was smoking it.
It doesn’t smell like Pineapple, but you’ll feel this mouth-watering aroma, which makes you want to smoke more. I take this when I’m with my girlfriend because she hates skunky smells and prefers these light tropical smells. If you’re with people sensitive to smell, you’ll love Pineapple Express.
It made me feel very lazy and sluggish. I know a lot of people who smoke weed for this exact reason, but I’m not a huge fan of it. The high felt similar to its parent strain, Trainwreck, that left me locked in my couch.
I felt a pretty powerful cerebral high, too. It’s one of those focused highs when you start seeing details like scratchies in the walls or the insides of a wine bottle. It’s like looking at things in 4K.
The high can flip on you if you’re a paranoid type because you’ll just have it enhanced. I had a friend who tripped out badly on it. Whatever mood you feel on the regular will be enhanced with this strain. So, if you feel anxiety and paranoia, expect it to be magnified here.
The THC content will not overwhelm you but expect to feel lazy and couch-locked. You won’t become Mr. Productive on this strain. If all you’re looking for is a relaxing strain to chill and watch a flick, it might be the perfect option.
Pineapple Express’s unique combination of taste and effects has contributed to its popularity, and it has become a sought-after strain for those seeking an invigorating and flavorful cannabis experience. Time has proven that this fruity little dream is here to stay. You just have to grab a seat.
18. Zkittlez
THC | 14% to 23% |
Aroma | Sweet, Fruity |
Flavor | Grape, grapefruit, berry |
Strain type | Indica Dominant Hybrid |
Zkittles is one of the most relaxing indicas I ever tried. I’m not usually a fan of indicas because they leave me feeling lazy, but I like Zkittles because I just feel relaxed without any sedative effects.
If you’re smoking to relax after work and want to get rid of the stress, Zkittles will give you a very pleasant smoking experience. You’ll taste the beautiful grape-like aroma, and you’ll be in heaven.
I noticed the bud has a really vibrant appearance, and the taste is delightful. Go to your local dispensary and smell it. It’s an indica-dominant cross between Grape Ape and Grapefruit, and the main thing that makes it stand out is the beautiful aroma.
Zkittles is the type of strain I smoke when I’m back home from work, sit on my favorite chair in my backyard, and just want to unwind. I stretch my legs, put on some good music, and puff away. The stress I felt during the day vanished.
I always feel a light high that soothes me without overwhelming my senses. Unlike other indicas that drain you of energy, this will make you feel relaxed, but you’ll still feel normal. You won’t feel like you’re sedated under the influence of a drug.
The smell will be one of your favorites if you love fruity flavors. The most distinct smell is the berry aroma, but my girlfriend said it reminded her of grapefruit. You can also sense some herbal undertones when you smoke it.
The bud is beautiful, with various green shades and purple/orange touches. They’re all coated in this glistering layer of trichomes, and you can really notice that while you’re high on the strain.
Expect to feel a slow and gradual onset of relaxation that soothes you. You won’t be overwhelmed; it’ll be just right. The THC levels test between 14-23%, so it’s on the lower end, and it’s great for beginners.
Zkittles’s combination of flavors, aromas, and relaxing effects made it popular over the last decade. It’s for people who want to relax while they’re high but still be able to get up off the couch.
19. Cherry Pie
THC | 16% to 24% |
Aroma | Sweet, Sour, Cherry Pie |
Flavor | Berry, Sweet, Tree Fruit |
Strain type | Hybrid |
If you love fruity aromas like I do, Cherry Pie will be one of your all-time favorites. This is my munchie strain, and I always pack my fridge before puffing on it because it makes me hungry as hell.
Cherry Pie is an all-around excellent strain that gives you an even-keeled, high, beautiful-smelling aroma, and the name is cool, too. If you tell your friends you’re going to smoke some Cherry Pie, they’re all going to be on board.
It’s derived from Granddaddy Purple and Durban Poison which are some of my favorite strains. I love Granddaddy Purple for its relaxing indica properties and Durban Poison for the energetic focus it gives me. I get to experience the best of both worlds in this strain.
A friend recommended this strain when I was fanboying Sour Diesel for the work benefits it gave me. He told me he likes to smoke it at work, and I gave it a try. I felt a really nice euphoric high that elevated my state of mind. I was stressed and noticed the stress and tension fading away from my body.
The name tells you a lot about the scent you can expect. It smells like cherries, but it reminded me of grandma’s cooking when she made sweet pies. It can remind you of baked goods like you just walked into a bakery full of pies. It’s beautiful.
The beauty of the aroma is also coupled with those visually striking green buds. It has these bright orange pistils that stand out. I feel bad grinding the buds because they’re so beautiful.
The THC levels are medium, testing between 16-24%, so you can feel a decent high on it. My favorite part about this strain is the duality of it: You feel a sativa-like energetic rush/focus in your brain and an indica-like relaxation that melts your stress away.
I always recommend this to my friends when the indica versus sativa debate comes up as a great example of a cross-breed strain where you can feel the benefits of both.
Cherry Pie’s combination of flavor, aroma, and effects has contributed to its popularity and enduring presence on the cannabis scene.

20. Cookies and Cream
THC | 20% to 26% |
Aroma | Sweet, Nutty, Light Spices, Fresh Bake Cookies |
Flavor | Sweet, Vanilla, Nutty |
Strain type | Hybrid |
I look for new strains to try out once in a while, and one time, I came across “Cookies and Cream.” It wasn’t appealing to me because the name sounded weird, but the people were hyped about it so I gave it a try.
I smelled the buds in the jar, and they gave off this vanilla-like flavor, sort of like smelling ice cream or chocolate. I knew it’d be good, and it’s probably named after the smell. The strain is a hybrid cross between Starfighter and Girl Scout Cookies (GSC), so you can expect mixed psychoactive effects.
The buds were strikingly beautiful, too. I noticed the strong green hues, slight purplish trichomes, and smaller orange hairs.
When I first lit it up, I smelled this fruity vanilla and nutty mix that made me crave ice cream, so I went to the fridge. I then got so hungry that I cleaned a whole box of ice cream. And proceeded to eat the chocolate that was left over. The munchies were real.
Before you smoke this strain, know it’s possibly the most munchie-inducing strain you’ll ever try in your life. Fill up your fridge with ice cream and sweets to prepare.
The high wasn’t anything spectacular to me. I really felt more of a body high than a head high, and it made me feel relaxed. I’d compare it to taking CBD oil because you feel full-body relaxation.
Cookies and Cream is a strain you can smoke at nighttime. Despite the sativa genetics being present, indica features seem to dominate, and you can easily go to sleep while high on it. But that’s only after you’re done munching on sweets.
I did feel a pleasant head high, but it didn’t make me euphoric or productive. I just felt like sitting on my couch and doing nothing but relaxing. I’d even label it a “lazy” strain perfect for when you’re kicking back and watching Netflix.
Cookies and Cream’s combination of flavor, aroma, and effects have contributed to its popularity, and it’s being promoted in many dispensaries for its beautiful scent. This delectable treat is yet another strain that has earned itself a permanent place on the best of the best lists.
21. AK
THC | 15% to 22% |
Aroma | Sour, Earthy |
Flavor | Skunky, Spicy, Herbal, Tobacco, Sweet |
Strain type | Hybrid |
AK is possibly the most mixed strain, deriving genetics from different landraces, including Colombian, Mexican, Thai, and Afghani. It is the epitome of a great hybrid strain. You really get to experience the whole world of cannabis in this one strain.
I refused to try this strain despite knowing about it for years due to the provocative name. A friend convinced me to give it a try one day, and I’ve grown fond of it. It’s regarded a lot as one of the greatest strains because it gives you a well-rounded experience.
The first thing I noticed was the skunky smell. It threw me off and made me dislike it because it reminded me of tobacco. However, as I smoked more, I noticed herbal and spicy undertones that made the smell bearable. It even smelled floral.
If you’re a tobacco smoker, you’ll handle the smell easily. If you’re sensitive to aromas, this is not the best-smelling strain. It could save you money on food because it won’t make you feel the munchies as much as fruity strains.
I felt this even-keeled high that gave me a relaxed and mellow experience. I was able to think rationally and form coherent sentences as I was debating a friend over politics. It made me talk a lot, so it’s a great social strain when you’re hanging out with friends.
The high won’t overwhelm you (it tests 15-22% THC), so if you have a beefed-up tolerance, you’ll barely feel high, and you’ll have to smoke more. I’ve never heard of anyone tripping out or getting anxious on AK – quite the opposite.
AK is quite popular among medical marijuana consumers because it can alleviate stress and has bodily effects. I always felt comfortable and relaxed in my body while high on AK, and this is most likely due to its therapeutic properties.
If this is the first strain you try, you’ll experience a mood boost, and you’ll retain your mental clarity. The smell is powerful, so you should only smoke it at home. If you’ve never tried AK, you’re really missing out because it’s hands down one of the best weed strains out there.
22. Garlic Cookies
THC | 20% to 32% |
Aroma | Pungent, Garlic, Earthy |
Flavor | Garlic, Spices & a Hint of Sweetness |
Strain type | Hybrid |
Garlic Cookies, or GMO Cookies, is a high-THC strain that is known for its distinct garlic-like flavor and very powerful psychoactive effects. If you want to try a whole new experience and you’re used to typical weed aromas, you need to try this.
I’ve almost never gotten as high as when I smoked Garlic Cookies, and I’d rank this top 5. This strain commonly tests above 30% THC, so it’s for veterans with a strong tolerance who want the most potent bud.
It’s a hybrid cross between the Girl Scout Cookies (GSC) and Chemdawg, both of which have solidified their legendary status as one of the great strains. You really get the best of both worlds here.
I smoked this while I was hiking out in nature with a friend, and we were overlooking the green fields. I felt this intense euphoria that translated to relaxation, and I laid back in the grass and looked at the blue sky for what felt like half an hour. I was so high that I could swear I felt my body levitating.
A couple of minutes after the high sets in the cerebral, it goes down to the body, and you feel it taking over completely. I liked the savory garlic flavor that had a pinch of sweetness, likely derived from its GSC parent strain.
If you’re not a fan of the scent of garlic, you could be thrown off the aroma of Garlic Cookies. If you’re a veteran like me, you could retain a sense of mental clarity, but I’d never give this to a new smoker.
Garlic Cookies strain is the ideal strain for veteran smokers who smoke daily and have a high tolerance. If you can’t seem to get high on other strains, you could use the extra THC found in this strain.
The experience will be intense, and it’s best if you smoke with a friend. Start your adventure with a very small amount and keep water on hand and vitamin C. After smoking this every week, your tolerance level will increase again, so consider saving this for special occasions.
23. Green Crack
THC | 13% to 25% |
Aroma | Tangy Citrus, Earthy |
Flavor | Mango, Citrus, Tropical, Fruity |
Strain type | Sativa |
My favorite rapper, Snoop Dogg, renamed this strain from “Green Kush” to “Green Crack” when he first smoked it and thought it hit like crack. Before I even knew about this strain, it stuck out to me at the dispensary because of how green the bud was. I’d never seen a strain that green.
The appearance alone makes Green Crack one of the world’s greatest weed strains. It’s not laced with crack, so don’t worry about it. That’s just the name of the strain. It’s a hybrid cross between Afghani and Skunk #1 which are both sativa strains.
I noticed that some strains that don’t have high THC content can still hit you hard, and this is one of them. Testing between 13-25%, you’d expect this to be a light high, but it hits you hard. That’s due to the pure sativa content.
I felt the high was concentrated in the head area with minor bodily effects. It gave me a rapid burst of mental energy that made me think of different scenarios in my head and made my thoughts fast-paced. If you’re feeling sluggish, this strain can give you the mental rush you need to get things done.
It’s great for creatives like artists, and it’s one of Snoop’s favorites. If you’re doing creative things like recording music, writing books, or drawing art, you’ll need a strain to stimulate your brain, and Green Crack is perfect for the job.
My brain felt uplifted, and I got so many new ideas while high on the strain. I felt an intense energy with a concentrated focus that gave me motivation. I imagine this is what a perfect sativa strain should be.
When I lit it up, I smelled this potent tropical aroma. Imagine all the fruits you associate with the tropics, like mango, citrus, and banana. That’s what Green Crack smells like. It’s a beautiful scent that makes it perfect for smoking in a social setting.
If you only smell the buds before rolling them, they have a citrus smell. The resinous buds are a medley of light and dark green hues underscored by orange pistils.
I personally love this strain when I’m feeling a little fatigued or down, as its effects can provide an uplifting boost to mood and motivation.
The bottom line is that Green Crack is a great alternative to OG Kush for people looking for a pure sativa experience with an energetic, high, and clear focus.
24. Amnesia Haze
THC | 20% to 25% |
Aroma | Earthy, Sweet, Spicy, Citrus |
Flavor | Lemon, Citrus, Lime |
Strain type | Sativa |
Amnesia Haze is one of the greatest “trippy” weed strains for enthusiasts who love to experience the psychoactive benefits of marijuana. Veterans who smoke weed daily swear by this strain when they want to enter trpiland and forget about their worries.
The name Amnesia Haze had me worried at first because I assumed it’d be a mushroom-like experience. It wasn’t. It was quite a pleasant high, not that different from other weed strains I’ve tried.
If you want to know what it feels like, imagine a relaxed sativa. Sativa strains are known for their energetic benefits on the mind, but this one gives you more of a relaxed state of mind. The only difference between this and an indica is that you don’t feel sluggish.
The strain has an interesting heritage. It’s a blend of South Asian and Jamaican landrace strains, and it’s known for its uplifting effects on the mind.
When I first smoked it, I leaned back in my chair and started laughing with my girlfriend. Everything seemed hilarious, but we were just watching a movie and eating pizza. Then, the real high crept in, and I started feeling dreamy.
This dreamy feeling doesn’t actually tire you out, but it makes you experience reality differently. The strain is known for invoking that feeling which is unusual for a sativa. The THC levels range between 20-25%, so it’s not among the most potent.
You’ll feel your mind relaxing and start feeling creative like with every other sativa. All the effects will be on the brain, so it can enhance the mood you’re feeling. If you’re feeling paranoid, it can enhance that feeling, so watch out.
It smelled like Citrus with a few subtle, earthly undertones. Its flavor is a mild hint of what to expect with the scent, offering a smooth and enjoyable smoking. You could also vape it to add to the flavor.
Medicinally, Amnesia Haze is a popular strain. Its energizing effects can provide relief from mental burdens while promoting a positive mood.
The strain’s engaging effects and intriguing lineage have contributed to its popularity among cannabis enthusiasts. Don’t worry though. This high will not be forgotten.
25. White Fire OG (WiFi OG)
THC | 20% to 28% |
Aroma | Earthy, Pine, Diesel |
Flavor | Pungent, Earthy, Herbal, Spicy |
Strain type | Hybrid |
White Fire OG, also known as WiFi OG, has beautiful bright orange buds that really stand out. I was mesmerized when I saw how bright this was in a jar at the dispensary and had to give it a try. Apparently, it’s named after the orange trichome coverage that makes it glisten like fire.
WiFi OG is a hybrid strain derived between “The White” and “Fire OG” strains, which are sativa and indica, respectively, so this strain gives you a balanced high with effects from both. You get a strong head high from the sativa genetics and a body high from the indica genetics.
When I held the bud in hand, I couldn’t believe it was real with those beautiful orange hairs. It’s one of the most beautiful buds I’ve ever held in hand.
The THC levels are on the high end, testing up to 28%, so this is not for the feeble smoker. You really have to have tolerance to smoke this with all the effects it has on the body.
Here’s my experience: I felt a rush of energy in my head that quickly sparked euphoria. This lasted for about 20-30 minutes. I then felt the high progressing down to my body and relaxing my muscles. This transition lasted for an hour.
I usually feel a head high when I smoke a strain like Sour Diesel that stays that way without progressing downward. On this strain, I felt the full spectrum of THC working on my body. It was one of the most blissful highs of my life.
I wouldn’t take this strain if I wanted a mild smoking experience. Smoking WiFi OG is like a learning experience that teaches you about all the effects of weed on the body.
The overall experience is relaxing, aside from the initial rush of energy. The smell is not the best because it smells like Diesel (earthy), but there are some Citrus undertones that make up for it.
White Fire OG is among the world’s greatest cannabis strains for its versatility. It gives me mental and physical relief and affects me like a proper therapeutic strain.
