How to Make a Sploof (2 Easiest Ways)

The smell of marijuana is very distinct. If you’re trying to enjoy your cannabis without anyone detecting what you’re up to, using a sploof is a great idea. If you’re wondering how to make a sploof you’re in luck, we’re going the show you how to make two different kinds below.

How to make a sploof guide

You won’t need many materials, and you can usually have a sploof made in under a minute.

How Effective Are Homemade Sploofs?

Sploofs infographic showing what they do

A homemade sploof can greatly reduce the smell of marijuana if it’s well-made. Sploofs that utilize activated carbon can eliminate over 90% of the marijuana odor produced by smoking.

There are no guarantees with these devices, no matter how well you put one together. They can be handy to reduce the smell of weed, though, and are especially helpful if you have roommates who don’t partake or parents who don’t want you smoking in the house (or at all!).

Which Tools Do You Need To Make A Sploof?

Tools for making a sploof

To make a sploof you need the following household items:

  • Toilet paper tube or a plastic bottle with a big cap
  • Dryer sheets
  • Scissors
  • Rubber band or tape

Notice these are all basic tools that you can find in every household. The only exception is a plastic bottle with a big cap opening. If you don’t have that, you can try making a sploof with something like a Coke bottle, but that won’t be as effective.

Which Types of Sploofs Can Easily Be Made at Home?

There are two types of sploofs you can make at home, toilet paper sploofs and plastic bottle sploofs. They both offer similar advantages because there’s a large opening to blow smoke through.

A toilet paper sploof is simpler to make and faster because you’re not cutting holes in plastic like you are on plastic bottle sploofs. A plastic bottle sploof will last longer, while a toilet paper one might last a few smoke sessions.

In basic terms, sploofs all use an enclosed tube filled with some kind of filtering agent with holes at each end.

1. Toilet Paper Sploof

Toilet paper sploof

Toilet paper roll sploofs are made using a cardboard tube. You don’t actually need to use a cardboard tube from a toilet roll. If you have another type of cardboard tube, like a paper towel roll, you can pretty much achieve the same effect.

The key is to blow smoke through a tube and then let the makeshift filter do the work. You can have the cardboard tube filled with dryer sheets in addition to covering one end of the tube.

You could even take out a small piece of cardboard, slice it up, roll it, and then block one side with a filtering agent to make the sploof.

Once you smoke through one of these, you’ll notice a lot of the smoke gets absorbed by the tissue/makeshift filter, and it’s not as thick as regular smoke, which is its intended purpose. You can use paper towels as a filter, but dryer sheets are better since they give off a nice fresh scent, further masking the smell of marijuana.

These types of sploofs are super easy to make because everyone has toilet paper at home.

2. Plastic Bottle Sploof

Plastic bottle sploof

An alternative to the toilet paper sploof, which is equally as creative, is the paper bottle sploof. This type of sploof is slightly harder to make but will last longer.

The idea is that you’ll smoke through the top of the bottle, and the smoke will get filtered by dryer sheets on the inside of the plastic bottle and come out on the other side.

This basically creates the same effect as a toilet paper tube. This method is a bit more time consuming because you’ll be using tools like a knife or scissors to cut openings in a plastic bottle.

The bottom of a bottle is often the thickest part and can be harder to cut. If you’d like you can also cut a little further up from the bottom and just have a shorter sploof.

How to Make a Toilet Paper Sploof: 4 Steps

1. Gather The Tools

Gather dryer sheets, empty toilet paper cardboard roll, and rubber band

Gather a cardboard tube like a toilet paper roll or paper towel roll. This will be the body of the sploof. You’ll then need a makeshift filter; dryer sheets are recommended, but paper towels can work as well. To avoid having a mess around your house of toilet paper, wait until you actually use up the roll.

Then you’ll just need a rubber band or some tape to secure the makeshift filter at the end of the cardboard tube. A rubber band is the easiest option, but tape can work too.

Scissors aren’t necessarily required, but they can help depending on if you want to do some cutting.

2. Stuff It With Dryer Sheets

Stuff it with dryer sheets

You’ll want to stuff it with dryer sheets on the inside and then put it in a vertical position, like in the photo.

You can also throw toilet paper on top so you don’t smell the detergent mixture coming off the sheets, although this is not required.

You can also totally skip this step, but having dryer sheets inside the cardboard tube will make the sploof more effective.

The final dryer sheet piece that you attach at the end is absolutely required.

3. Seal It With A Rubber Band or Tape

Seal sploof with a rubber band

Fold a dryer sheet over the end of the tube so that it covers one end. Use a rubber band to wrap it tight. You can also use tape if you don’t have a rubber band sitting around.

If your dryer sheets are too big (there are many variants), remove them and cut them down again. That way, they won’t get in your fingers as you smoke. It should look pretty nice at this point, and you’re ready to start smoking.

If you can’t find a rubber band tape can also work, but I also find a rubber band to be the easiest and fastest way to secure the makeshift filter.

4. Start Smoking

Start smoking

Your sploof is done! Now you can start smoking. To filter out the stinky marijuana smell, just light your joint (and add fire to it) and blow the smoke inside the sploof.

A single sploof will last through a few smoke sessions, but keep an eye on the dryer sheets. Once they lose their filtering power, they will become dark or get a yellowish color if you’re mixing your joints with tobacco.

Why not just throw them away? It takes you 15 seconds to make one of these sploofs, so use them clean.

As toilet paper tubes degrade when they are in contact with your moist breath, they may wear out sooner than a plastic bottle. The build below will provide a more lasting option.

How to Make a Plastic Bottle Sploof: 6 Steps

A plastic bottle sploof is a bit bigger and will last you longer because it doesn’t get ruined by moisture or vapor as fast as a cardboard-made spoof.

1. Get A Bottle With A Big Cap

Bottle with a big cap measured next to thumb

This step matters a lot and can save you a second trip to the store. If you think you can smoke through a Coke bottle without the smoke blowing back in your face, you’re in for a surprise.

One of those sporty water bottles will do. It helps if it has soft plastic at the bottom.

When you’re picking these out at the store, use your thumb as a reference. If the cap is twice as big as your thumb, it’s a good choice to use for making a sploof.

2. Cut An Opening With A Knife

Cutting a plastic bottle

There’s no written rule as far as cutting the bottle. You can cut out the whole bottom and wrap it like a toilet paper sploof (the most popular method).

First, you’ll need a super sharp knife that’ll actually cut through plastic. Don’t underestimate how tough this is, especially if you’re poking holes at the bottom where the plastic is the thickest (aside from the cap).

You can cut holes of any size; it doesn’t matter how exactly you cut them. The most important thing is that you have an opening for smoke to leave the bottle.

Warning: Be careful with this step because the knife can slide from the pressure and cut you.

3. Twist The Opening With Scissors

Twist the opening with scissors

Once you have an opening, it’ll be dangerous to stretch it open with your knife, so grab another (less sharp) object like scissors to stretch the hole and make it bigger.

You only need a few twists with scissors to get this done.

This will create a beautiful opening that’ll allow all the smoke to come out even after passing multiple filter layers.

4. Secure With A Rubber Band

Grab a rubber band, throw a sheet over the holes you poked, and then secure it with a rubber band.

If you cut out the whole lower portion of the bottle, you’re going to need a bigger sheet. In fact, you could use multiple sheets for this.

Make sure the rubber band grips it tight so you can stuff other sheets on the inside without them falling out.

5. Add Dryer Sheets And Toilet Paper On Top

Add dryer sheets and toilet paper on top

A bottle can be quite large, and you want to stuff it with dryer sheets so that by the time the smoke reaches the final sheet, most of it is absorbed/filtered.

A good 2-3 large sheets can fill up a small bottle. Then, you’ll want to place toilet paper at the very top.

Why toilet paper, though? Toilet paper won’t have a smell, while a dryer sheet will smell like a detergent. This can impair your smelling senses.

When you’re directly smoking into a toilet paper sheet, you’ll only smell the weed smoke.

6. Start Smoking

Smoke coming from plastic bottle sploof

You’re all set at this point. You can now point your mouth to that large bottle opening, blow the smoke in there, and watch it come out on the other side.

Compare this to blowing smoke out of your mouth directly, and you’ll notice a decrease in smoke.

A plastic bottle sploof will last a lot longer than the toilet-paper-roll version. However, you will need to replace the dryer sheets as you did with the toilet paper roll sploof, so keep an eye on the color.

Utilizing Activated Carbon (Optional)

Activated Carbon on a table

Step two will be a bit different if you’re using activated carbon. You will tear a piece of paper towel that is just a bit longer than the plastic container you are using. On a flat surface, lay down a piece of paper towel and pour a lump of activated carbon (relative to your container’s size).

Let’s move on to something you’re familiar with. Take the paper towel with the activated carbon in it and roll it like a fat joint. Run water over that mass that looks like a joint. Your carbon filter is activated by this.

Fill the plastic container with the fat wet joint and seal it with the punctured cap. With the cap end acting as the mouthpiece, and the bottom end as the mesh filter, you will be able to use your new sploof. It’s game on!

Most Popular Filtering Agents For Sploofs

It’s up to you which filtering agent you use. Activated charcoal will last much longer than dryer sheets at keeping your smoking undetectable.

The type of container you use can also affect the type of filtering agent you choose. If you like one more than the other, we recommend trying them both in different builds. You can experiment with different DIY projects based on your own needs and design preferences since they are not expensive in any way.

1. Dryer Sheets

Dryer sheets on a table

Sploof filters are the easiest and cheapest to procure. There’s a good chance you already have some lying around the house.

You can use dryer sheets to neutralize the smell of weed smoke since they’re often infused with their own smell. The thick weave of the dryer sheet material also traps the molecules that contribute to the distinctive smell of weed smoke.

Depending on how often you smoke, you can keep yourself in sploofs for a month for only a few bucks at your local market (if you don’t have a box lying around).

2. Activated Charcoal

Activated Charcoal on a table

One of the best odor and gas filters available is activated charcoal, also called active charcoal, activated carbon, or active carbon. The charcoal is so good because it is highly porous on each side.

As a result of its rapid microporosity, a single gram of activated charcoal is equivalent to 32,000 square feet despite being small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.

You might not understand what that number means, but in terms of adsorption (yes, that is the correct word), it means that activated charcoal has plenty of space to capture and hold the marijuana molecules that cause the smoke to smell.

Despite sounding complicated, it’s really not. Activated charcoal is available in most pet stores because it’s used in aquarium filters. You will have to spend a bit more than you would on dryer sheets, but it will effectively kill the cannabis odor that will reveal your secret.

If you are using the toilet-paper-roll sploof, you could add some activated charcoal to it. If you wanted to use large amounts of activated charcoal in these containers, you would need to cover the ends with a dryer sheet.

You could lose the dryer sheet covering the bottom of the sploof because of its weight, and then you would have a big mess on your hands.

How To Smoke Out Of A Sploof?

Inhale your joint as normal, and exhale the smoke through the opening of a sploof. This reduces the odor of weed smoke. You can get extra fancy and add active carbon.

Smoke particles disperse and separate as they pass through the mesh and filter system. By doing this, the smoke does not appear like the thick cloud that you would think it would be when it comes out the opposite end.

That’s not due to some magical process, but because a less strong smell results from this. Since the particles containing the scent are no longer adhering together, it is weaker now.

5 Sploof Alternatives To Cover Weed Smell

Sploofs are nothing more than tubes with holes in each end. Make your own sploofs by being creative!

Activated charcoal can be inserted inside the inner tube of chapstick. Just poke holes in the top and bottom and start smoking.

If you wanted to be really fancy, you could use PVC or ABS pipe to make your sploof. You can also use charcoal sheets. The pipe should be filled with dryer sheets, capped at both ends, then drilled with a few holes. You’re all set.

Despite a sploofs ability to filter smoke, what about the smoke from a bong or joint?

1. Crack A Window

Illustration of cracking a window open

Pay attention to whether windows are unlocked if they are normally locked, return screens that you have popped out of windows, and simply return windows to the way they should have been after smoking.

Smoke is often blown directly outside through the windows of bedrooms and bathrooms.

Place a fan on the windowsill to make this method more effective. The smoke should be blown to the fan’s back after a hit, which will push the smoke outdoors. Utilize an odor-eliminating spray like Febreze to mask the smell even more.

2. Put A Damp Towel At The Bottom of Your Door

Illustration of a damp towel that absorbs smoke

Using this method keeps smoke from leaving the room, which can be a problem. Roll a damp towel long ways to cover the crack at the bottom of the door.

Using a sploof and an open window will help stop the smoke from becoming trapped in the room.

3. Air Purifier

Illustration of an air purifier

Consider buying an air purifier or filter if you don’t want to do DIY and have a bit of extra money to burn.

As well as filtering out airborne allergens, these nifty devices also trap marijuana smoke.

As a result, we don’t recommend solely relying on an air purifier. As a second layer of protection, buy or make a sploof.

4. Run A Hot Shower

Illustration of running a hot shower

Pipes and bongs are frequently used in this way since vapor is generated. Steam and vapor from a hot shower counteract the smell.

Turn the water to the hottest setting in the bathroom before smoking.

After you smoke, hop in the shower, soap up, and use aromatic soap and shampoo to get rid of the lingering smell.

5. Vape

Illustration of a vape with smoke

The popularity of vaping cannabis is because it is a discreet way to inhale it, plus it produces less odor than a joint.

It is becoming more and more popular to use vaporizers. As an alternative to nicotine vape solutions, you can use hash oil.

The high is reportedly intensified when hash oil is inhaled through a vaporizer.

The amount of concentrates in cannabis vape juice is up to 30 times greater than in dry marijuana leaves. There is very little research conducted on the effects of vaporizing hash oil, which means that its hazards are unknown.

The Combo Platter of Masking Marijuana

Despite being listed separately, all of these methods can be combined. Make the bathroom steamy and hot by turning on a hot shower.

You should dampen a towel and place it under the door, along with opening a window so the smoke can dissipate out and fresh air can enter.

Blowing into a sploof next to the window after smoking is a great way to get rid of smoke, especially if you have a fan pointing outward.

Afterward, hop in the shower to wash away any incriminating evidence and spray on an odor eliminator before heading off.

Final Thoughts:

Sploof covering up weed smoke

As you can tell sploofs are super easy to make at home. It’s also the least expensive method to cover up weed smoke.

There’s also the option of using air purifiers, cracking a window, vaping weed, or combining all these cover-ups at once.

Before you start smoking, you can also light a candle or incense, open a window, or spray some deodorant. Then, after the room has been sprayed again, leave the candle burning or leave a candle burning. The results are worth the extra effort.
