How does a warm THC-infused or CBD-infused milk drink sound? What if you could wake-and-bake with cold cannamilk in your cereal or end your day with warm marijuana milk to send you off to dreamland? You can, and we’re going to show you exactly how to make cannabis milk below.
Weed milk is easy to make and only takes a short time to make. The fats in whole milk bind with the cannabinoids in marijuana to create gorgeous milk that will either get you high or chill you out, depending on the strain you decide to use.
The best part is you can flavor it to your liking using vanilla or make it vegan by using homemade almond milk. It has to be homemade, so you get the fats from the almonds, so don’t go buying commercial nut milk!

How to Make Weed Milk: 5 Steps
Let’s talk about the simple steps required to make cannamilk. If you don’t fancy drinking it, simply use it in any of your favorite recipes that require milk, such as mac and cheese or hot chocolate.
If you are vegan, allergic to nuts, or vegan and allergic to nuts, we’ve got you covered below.
Step 1. Choose Your Milk
For regular weed milk using whole milk, you’ll need 3-5 grams of decarboxylated cannabis per one cup of milk. You cannot use skim or partly skim milk for this, as we stated above. You need those fats!
Lipophilic compounds, such as THC and CBD, attract fat molecules. Water alone will not dissolve them, since they are non-water-soluble. In combination with fat, THC and CBD absorption are enhanced 2.5-fold and 3-fold compared to fat-free formulations.
As a result, full-fat milk will result in a recipe that is 2.5-3 times more powerful than choosing a fat-free alternative. When it comes to milk, more fat is better for those seeking THC’s intoxicating benefits. Otherwise, you’re just wasting your weed.
Step 2. Decarboxylate Your Flower
Grind or pull apart the cannabis flower and decarboxylate it. Bud shouldn’t be too fine to avoid overcooking it. To extract the most cannabinoids from the cannabis flower, you must decarboxylate it. Bake ground cannabis for 45 minutes at 260 degrees Fahrenheit. Since ovens vary, keep an eye on it so it doesn’t burn. Maybe use a cookie sheet.
Here’s a tip to never burn your flower again: get an air-tight mason jar, fill it with your ground-up flower. You will need to pour enough water into the crockpot to cover the jar about one-third of the way up and let it sit, covered, on high for 4 hours. Let the jar cool before opening it.
Step 3. Heat Your Milk
Near the end of the 45 minutes, heat your milk by itself in a saucepan. Do not boil the milk!
If you are making homemade cannabis milk, you must avoid curdled milk at all costs. To prevent curdling, make sure your milk is never heated above 212°F by using a digital instant-read thermometer. Adding too much heat too quickly can also cause milk to curdle, even if the temperature doesn’t reach 212°F.
The temperature of the milk should be slowly increased over time, so it is important to follow the directions below. A scorched taste or a protein film on top of milk can also come from excessive heat or heating too fast. Be patient!
There is a difference between scalding milk and curdling milk. At 170°F, milk scalds. During this process, milk loses its enzymes, and many of its proteins are denatured, killing bacteria.
In older recipes, milk was purposefully scalded to kill bacteria, and an enzyme was added to prevent thickening. Pasteurization has made most milk clean of bacteria and enzymes, so this isn’t something we worry about today. It won’t affect the consistency of the milk since the temperature will be kept below 170°F to avoid scalding and curdling.
Step 4. Combine Your Milk And Marijuana
Once warm, combine your milk and flower, stirring well. Alternatively, you can simmer (again, not boil) fan leaves in milk for a similar effect, and this is a great way to use up fan leaves!
As your weed milk is infusing, stay close and make sure it does not boil, stirring occasionally. If it boils, your weed milk will lose its potency. This combination should stay warmed and infuse for about 90 minutes.
Step 5. Strain Your Cannabis Milk
As soon as the infusion is complete, the plant matter must be strained from the milk. Because milk is hot, the process can be challenging.
Pour the infused milk through a coffee filter nestled inside a small funnel over a mason jar to strain it.
Another useful method for separating plant matter from milk is to use a French press. You can use cheesecloth or an extremely fine strainer as well. Most people have at least one of these things on hand!
Vegan Version of this Recipe
Not everyone drinks cow’s milk, and thankfully the fat in nuts is perfect for binding to the cannabinoids in your bud. Do yourself a big favor and make this almond milk from scratch. You can get away with buying commercial almond milk, but choose one with a high-fat content.
Start with 45 grams (just shy of half a cup) of almonds you have soaked overnight and drained. Blend with a cup of water until it looks like milk. Strain with a very fine strainer or a nut milk bag if you have one. Follow the recipe above for weed milk!
What if I’m Vegan And Allergic To Nuts?
Tough titty, Kansas City! Just kidding, we’ve got you covered. To come up with an alternative for you, we had to get creative. We had to pick a milk that was high in fat but did not contain nuts.
Assuming coconut milk counts as nut milk, we ruled that out, and came up with hemp milk, rice milk, and oat milk as alternatives. If you’re using a lower fat milk, you can use sunflower lecithin to help the THC or CBD bind to the milk. That way you’re not left with a drink that has oil settling on the top when left for a few minutes.
You can make bigger batches using 32 ounces of any milk with 10 grams of cannabis, and if you want to go full-on, tree-hugging granola, you can add chai spices, turmeric, or cocoa.
What Can You Use Cannamilk For?
Cannabis infusions like this one could have the best possibilities! Think about that for a moment. There are no limits to what you can do with weed milk, so it is an excellent weed edible. The benefits of this infusion are numerous, ranging from baking to coffee to ice cream to sauces and soups. That’s right, soup, mac and cheese, ice cream, and even chocolate milk.
What you never knew you were missing is this infusion. If you’ve already baked with cannabutter or made THC oil at home, this is a natural progression of your cannabis evolution. It is not as strong as THC oil, but weed milk’s potential for many uses is electrifying.
Imagine a creamy alfredo sauce over your favorite noodles. Pure bliss. Rasta Pasta!! (I can’t take credit for that; it’s the name of a restaurant in my hometown of Toronto, Canada.)
Silky smooth cannabis milk has a unique taste. The earthy notes and creamy finish make it a good match for coffee. With little more than a splash of milk, you could easily put some into your morning coffee. Read on for a cannabis-infused coffee creamer that will leave you speechless. Coffee before talkie anyway, right?
The potential of weed-infused milk is really exciting. Are you already thinking of all the possibilities of what you could do with it? Can I Make Weed Cream For My Coffee?
Does Martha Stewart own a blender? Of course, you can! Using cream instead of milk is even better because it has a higher fat content. It’s a genius way to start your day or have a little afternoon pick-me-up to beat those 3 p.m. drops in energy if you play your strains right.
The fat content of the cream, such as in heavy or whipping cream, makes it less likely to curdle than milk. We will still recommend maintaining the same temperature restrictions in any cooking technique, but there is a little more wiggle room.
Can I Make Whipped Weed Cream?
It’s easy to turn any dessert into a treat with cannabis-infused whipped cream. You’ll never go back to store-bought whipped cream once you learn how easy it is to make your own!
Besides serving as a delicious topping, whipped cream also forms an integral part of some of the world’s richest and most complex dessert recipes. When we are out of whipped cream, most of us head straight for the grocery store, but you might be surprised to discover just how easy it is to make it from scratch, and you’ll soon be convinced that it is truly worth the effort.
How To Make Cannabis-Infused Whipped Cream
This is only slightly trickier than making Weed Milk. Because you’re dealing with whipping cream, you’re actually going to use half of what you used for the milk at first anyway.
- Slowly heat a half cup of whipping cream on the stove at low to medium heat. Do not let this cream boil.
- Add your decarboxylated flower to the pot (3-5 grams, just like the milk recipe), and allow it to infuse on very low for 90 minutes. Once 90 minutes have elapsed, let this cool.
- In a separate bowl, whip another half cup of whipping cream, adding optional sugar and/or a splash of vanilla. As you start to see the whipping cream stiffen, slowly add your cooled cannabis infusion and keep whipping until the cream starts looking soft but forming stiff peaks.
Your freshly made whipped cream that is infused with weed is now ready to create some of the most amazing edibles you have ever tasted. If you aren’t sure where to start, then you might want to make some waffles. Everybody loves waffles!
General Dosing Of Cannamilk
Time to enjoy! A quarter of a cup should yield approx 1 gram of cannabis, so go slow. As with any edible, be it cannabutter, gummies, or candy, wait at least 1-2 hours for effects to take place before having more.
Now you can use your weed milk as you would regular milk: drink it, make smoothies, pour over cereal, or even make ice cream!
Boiling Vape Cartridges in Milk (Don’t Do it)
Boiling carts in milk is a cheap way to get a similar effect to making cannamilk yourself. The bottom line here is: it’s disgusting and dangerous. Don’t do it.
It may seem like a good idea to repurpose old cannabis products, and there are plenty of videos on this trend. But eating Tide Pods was a trend, and so was climbing mountains of milk crates.
Boiling vape cartridges in either milk in hopes of liquifying the resin to infuse is stupid. These videos depict people doing this, extracting the concentrate, straining it, and making hot chocolate to mask the taste of the resin.
There are several reasons why this is an idiotic thing to do.
Risk of Explosion
There are multiple chambers in a vape cart, each fitted with teeny tiny holes so it can feed the right amount of concentrate and vapor back to you. These things were never intended to be put under such extreme pressures such as boiling them in milk.
If a hot spot or plugged hole were to cause the entire structure to explode, glass shards would fly, ruining all your efforts. Do you like your eyeballs?
Plastic Parts
Even though vape pens and carts are made mainly from metal, which can resist extreme temperatures, it’s not uncommon to find plastic gaskets or other cheap parts, given the fact that most vapes aren’t made here in the United States. The parts are so well concealed that they are difficult to see or remove, and they melt if they are dropped into a boiling liquid like water or milk, which can contaminate the liquid with poisonous chemicals. How do you like your digestive system?
Questionable Materials and Metals
Vapes and carts are often made of cheaper, more questionable materials that can be (mostly) safe under normal use but dangerous under extreme heat. Due to the difficulty in determining the outcome, it’s best to stay away from risking it. Do you like your body free of poisonous lead, mercury, arsenic, and cadmium?
Other Unfavorable Things In Vape Carts
Carts might claim to be 100% pure, but most of them use a solvent to make the concentrated oil easier to vape. While these solvents and sprays have been approved for vaporizers, many could cause unpleasant side effects if they were ingested orally. Most are not safe to heat above a certain temperature, and some should never be consumed by humans.
Furthermore, you may have heard that the human mouth contains over 6 billion bacteria, and if you’ve been honking on your vapes for some time, those germs can breed inside your vape, cultivating E.coli, Strep, and other nasty things. How would you like a hot chocolate made from that?
Stick to using fresh bud, Bud. It will taste way better, it will be safer, and the buzz that you’ll get will be worth the effort.
Frequently Asked Questions About Making Cannabis-Infused Milk
Is Weed Milk Good For You?
In terms of smoking weed versus consuming it in milk or other edibles, yes, weed milk is much better for you than smoking. The added bonus is that you’ll get the vitamins and minerals that are in the milk of your choosing.
That said, overdoing it can result in you feeling ill, just like anything else. It’s always best to start low and slow and let the cannabis-infused milk take effect before having more. This can take up to 2 hours and last for 6-12 hours, as edibles tend to do.
Can You Get High From Weed Milk?
Hell yeah! It’s no different than eating edibles or drinking a pot-infused drink from the dispensary. If you’ve infused a THC-forward strain into your recipe, then you’re bound to get high.
Can I Make CBD Milk?
Yes. The process is the same as with THC milk, and this can be a relaxing end to your day if you’re so inclined. There are even commercial CBD kinds of milk on the market that promise all sorts of benefits associated with CBD.
CBD before bed is a lovely way to end your day, especially if you’re dealing with stress. CBD can loosen your muscles and send your brain on vacation so you can deeply relax and have better overall sleep.
Having those benefits in the form of warm milk is like having Snoop Dogg himself tucking you in. Imagine his soothing voice singing you a lullaby and pulling your weighted blanket up and around you, then kissing you on the forehead. Too far? We think not.
What Are The Best THC Strains for Making Weed Milk?
Ultimately, the decision on which strain you want to make marijuana milk with is entirely up to you. If you grow your own weed or have some lying around, it’s all good. Some say to use higher THC strains because weed milk typically is not as strong as using THC-infused oil.
Some of the highest THC strains on the market include Royal Gorilla, Chemdog, Bruce Banner #3, and Cookies Gelato. We went looking for a strain that was high in THC and tasted like something that would sound good in milk, however.
Y Life (Cookies x Cherry Pie) was crossed with Snowman, a sativa-dominant Cookies phenotype, to produce Cereal Milk. It has strong ice cream and milk flavors that will keep you coming back for more. At 24% THC, it’s high enough to spike your milk in all the best ways. What could be more perfect than that?
What Are The Best CBD Strains For Making Weed Milk?
THC’s cool big sister, CBD, is super chill, producing mellow, non-psychoactive effects ideal for a wide range of personal and medical applications. Some of the top CBD strains include Ringo’s Gift, Harlequin, Sour Space Candy, and Cannatonic.
Unfortunately, most CBD strains don’t taste great. They typically lean toward an earthy or citrus flavor profile, and that doesn’t really go with milk unless you want to experiment with an orange and vanilla combo and make a cannamilk that tastes kind of like a Creamsicle.
We searched high and low for a sweeter CBD strain that would make for great milk and came up with Cherry Wine, a berry-flavored 17% CBD strain that made users feel totally relaxed with zero paranoia. Customers report their moods were happy and uplifted, and anxiety melted away to allow them to sleep. Sounds like a dream, right? Pun intended.
You could add a small amount of honey to your CBD milk, and enjoy a cookie before bed, just like when you were 5. It’s all in the name of self-care, and we’re all for it.
How Do I Store My Cannabis-Infused Milk?
Keep in mind that whatever expiry date your milk had before you made your weed milk will be the date your milk expires. Store it in a glass container in the fridge, just as you would regular whole milk or almond milk. You can even freeze it to make ice cubes.
It is always a good idea to label any cannabis-infused products and keep them out of children’s reach at all times.
Why Should I Make Cannabis-Infused Milk?
Cannabis edibles are just a lot of fun, and think of all the recipes you can make with marijuana-infused milk, cream, or whipped cream! This high can be felt throughout your body and can leave you giggling and munching all night. You can still get a pleasant, safe, and potent cannabis experience with edibles made with cannabis milk, whether you’re lactose intolerant or not.
How Much Weed Milk Should I Drink?
How much to consume is a highly individual decision based on a wide range of considerations. One person’s dose could be overwhelming, while another’s dose might barely get them to Giggletown. A good dose size will also be determined by the strength of the cannabis strain used, the amount of cannabis used in the preparation, and the amount used in preparing the cannamilk.
In the first batch of a new cannamilk recipe, if you’re unsure about the potency of the high, use half the suggested amount of cannabis, and start with a small amount.
Even if you consume too much, the high will only last for a few hours, and you can counteract it with CBD if necessary to bring yourself back down somewhat.
Enjoy your new recipes! The possibilities with cannamilk are endless, especially if you’re still trying to get the image of Snoop Dogg kissing your forehead out of your mind!
